The 4 C’s, not to be confused with the 7 Seas

You, a very wise man indeed, would never just stroll into an Audi dealership and pick up an A4 without previously researching all the specs, and you therefore will NOT do the same with a ring. Here is the guide to help you become an all-knowing ring master.

The 4 C’s are COLOR, CUT, CLARITY, and CARAT. These words, in relation to a wedding/engagement ring refer to the diamond.

Color: Though Zales commercials may try and have you believe differently, most diamonds have some color in them. The color grade refers to the amount of color in a diamond.

Cut: this is NOT the shape of the diamond (we will go over that later). The cut is the most important aspect to consider when purchasing a diamond. The cut, if done properly, can hide flaws and enhance sparkle. The better the cut, the brighter the sparkle.

Clarity: the higher clarity a diamond has, the fewer imperfections or flaws it has.

Carat (Ct.): unit of measurement of diamonds, or more plainly put, the size of the rock

Another important thing to keep in mind is SHAPE. If all of the things listed above were the quality of denim in a pair of jeans, the shape is the style. Here are some shapes you will encounter in your effort to become Lord of the Ring:

Round: shockingly enough, a circle
Princess: plainly said, a square
Emerald: a rectangular shape with rounded edges
Marquise: a long, oval shape with pointed ends
Oval: an oval
Radiant: a square with rounded edges
Pear: another easy one, a pear shape with a pointed end
Heart: need we say more
Cushion: more rectangular Radiant, also with rounded edges
